The Biomechanics Initiative, Inc., the driving force behind National Biomechanics Day, together with our sponsors are proud to announce our
2026 National Biomechanics Day Grant Program
Competitive application process:
The application is limited to two single-spaced pages (min. of 12-pt font) including:
-
- Application title. Succinct is preferred.
- Applicant’s name, affiliation, position (M.S. or Ph.D. student or equivalent), email address and mentor’s name, position and email address.
- Personal statement: why are you interested in hosting an NBD event aimed at diversifying biomechanics?
- Collaborators: list participating faculty and students (please include all anticipated collaborators’ names; can be updated later).
- Target population: school or community group of high school students (minimum 25 students/participants). We target primarily high school students but you can work with younger students.
- Description of planned NBD event: briefly describe your planned activities. Your event can be live, virtual or a hybrid combination.
- Recruitment plan: how will you attract/inform your target group? We strongly recommend active recruitment over general announcements. Please plan to contact local high schools or community groups, for example, and invite them to participate. This will enhance your ability to recruit the minimum group size.
- Budget: describe item(s) and provide quantity, individual costs, and total costs for each item. Include the sum of everything together to provide total costs. Take into account any applicable sales taxes and shipping costs.
- Additional information pertinent to your event.
The application form will also ask for your headshot (required) and social media handles (optional) as well as any additional documentation you would like to provide.
Eligibility requirements:
Applicants must be a student enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. program in Biomechanics or a related field at any university worldwide (any and all Biomechanics students and faculty can be members of your NBD team). Applicants must be committed to:
-
- Hold an NBD 2026 event.
- Be a member of the NBD Community and register for NBD 2026 (join and register here). Please make sure all lab faculty and students participating in the event are members and register as well (it is not needed to register the high school students). We have heard from some members of the international community that they cannot access Membership Toolkit. VPN has been a successful solution. If you are unable to access Membership Toolkit to register please send an email to info@thebiomechanicsinitiative.org. This will count as registration for the grant eligibility and will help us understand how widespread this issue is. Thank you.
- Submit a succinct final report about the event to The Biomechanics Initiative, Inc. (instructions provided upon award).
- Submit a university or institution receipt to The Biomechanics Initiative, Inc. (instructions provided upon award).
- Record the NBD event with photos and video (if possible) and share these with NBD and on social media.
More than one application can be submitted from a single institution but only one application per institution will be funded. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of The Biomechanics Initiative, Inc Board of Directors.
Approximately 20 awards will be distributed, each with:
- $500 to support NBD event expenses (e.g. school/community group travel costs, producing promotional materials, lab supplies for instruments, other), registration and fees for a 2026 biomechanics conference (must be approved by TBI, Inc) as a student participant and travel costs to this meeting. Applicants may request up to $1,000 of support; however, the request for an increased budget must be accompanied by exceptional justification. $500 is the standard budget. It is expected that any biomechanics conference funds will not exceed approximately half the total grant amount. Bank fees will be removed from the grant awards requiring a wire transfer at the rate established by the bank (typically ranging from $40-60). Funds cannot be used for stipends or salaries.
- Award funds will be sent to the appropriate university or institutional office.
- Recognition through social media, professional societies, TBI Inc/NBD, and potentially sponsor websites.
Notes:
- Applications open December 31, 2025.
- Application deadline Jan 31, 2026.
- Award Decision: Feb 17, 2026.
- There are no F & A or Indirect Funds associated with this grant.
- NBD Guidelines can provide guidance and assistance on how to develop and host an NBD event. (See this link).
